the obscurity of the silver lining

Today, I read the Yassin for the first time in months. Today, my Zuhr prayers were led by an eight-year-old orphan- he led us with such confidence and such grace; suddenly, all the academic accomplishments in the world would not help me in feeling less inferior. Today, I realized that i know squat about the meaning of life- but i'm willing to learn. today, i learnt of a new song entitled 'apabila Izrael datang hampir' (when Izrail comes near). these orphans sing this song every time after they perform their prayers. today, i almost cried shamelessly in front of a whole room of people worrying that their plastic plates would not be good enough for us. today, i felt like a fraud- a mere shadow of what a real muslim is supposed to be. today, i watched little boys and girls running in the rain to salam me before our car could leave. today, i witnessed people eating less than their (already meager) share of food so that my family could eat more. today, i met a professional nuclear engineer- who chooses to devote her full time to the education of these children. today, i met real instances of kindness and selflessness, of true love and acceptance.

today, i feel changed.

this is a good way to start the school year.
